Act 1: The Awakening
Overview
Act 1 introduces the player to the world of Mind On. It covers the transition from an ordinary citizen to an "Awakened" consciousness wielder. The thematic focus is on discovery, wonder, and the sudden weight of responsibility.
Setup
The player begins as a technician or researcher aboard the Awakening Station. During a routine maintenance check on the station's core, a massive quantum surge occurs—triggered by an early ripple of The Fading. Instead of being killed, the player's consciousness is forcibly expanded.
Progression
- The Surge: The inciting incident. The player experiences their first vision of the Quantum Layer.
- First Contact (Internal): Vera Solstice finds the player and stabilizes their mind. She realizes the player has "Awakened" naturally, which is extremely rare.
- The Training: A tutorial sequence where Vera teaches the player basic Quantum Sight and Mind Touch.
- The Breach: The station is attacked by Unbound rebels seeking to steal quantum research, or perhaps attracted by the surge.
- The Defense: The player must use their new abilities to help Captain Orion defend the station.
Branching Points
- The Path of the Wielder: Does the player focus on technical mastery (Efficiency), empathetic connection (Harmony), or raw power (Impact)? This affects early ability unlocks.
- Station Defense: Does the player focus on saving personnel or securing the quantum core? This affects their reputation with the Human Collective.
Resolution
The station is secured, but Vera reveals that the surge wasn't a fluke—it's a sign that reality is thinning. The player is sent to the Consciousness Academy for further training, marking the end of the tutorial phase and the beginning of the wider journey.
Design Notes
- Pacing: Fast-paced opening followed by a slower training period, ending in high-stakes combat.
- Visuals: Use heavy particle effects and color shifts to represent the player's shifting perception of reality.
- Dialogue: Vera's dialogue should be comforting but firm, emphasizing the danger of the player's new state.
