Overview

Captain Marcus Orion commands the orbital defense station Awakening Station and serves as the military liaison to the Consciousness Academy. A veteran of the early consciousness wars, Orion represents the pragmatic, security-focused perspective on humanity's newfound powers. While he respects the Academy's work, he constantly worries about the dangers of unchecked consciousness wielding.

Appearance

Orion is in his early 40s, with the weathered look of someone who has seen too much combat. He keeps his dark hair military-short and maintains a rigorous physical regimen. His eyes are a striking grey that seem to assess everyone he meets for threats. He wears a modified uniform that incorporates quantum shielding technology—practical rather than ceremonial.

A distinctive scar runs from his right temple to his jaw, a souvenir from a consciousness weapon that nearly killed him during the wars. He doesn't hide it; if anything, he seems to wear it as a reminder.

Personality

Orion operates from a place of deep responsibility. Having witnessed the devastation that untrained wielders can cause, he approaches every new awakening with a mixture of hope and dread. He's not opposed to consciousness wielding—he recognizes its necessity—but he believes in strict protocols, training, and oversight.

His skepticism extends to the aliens encountered after First Contact. While he follows diplomatic protocols, he maintains contingency plans for every scenario. "Trust but verify" is his motto, though privately he admits he leans more toward "verify, then trust cautiously."

Despite his stern exterior, Orion genuinely cares about the people under his protection. He knows the names of every crew member on his station and takes personal responsibility for their safety.

His relationship with Ambassador Vex is professionally cordial but personally tense. He doesn't trust the Void Singers' motives, even if he acknowledges their power.
