The Great Silence

Overview

The Great Silence is the period of millions of years during which no consciousness-wielding species made contact with one another. It is the reason humanity believed it was alone in the universe until First Contact.

History

Following the Consciousness Wars, the surviving species retreated into isolation, fearing that further contact would lead to more destruction. They used "Quantum Shrouds" to hide their presence from the physical universe and from each other.

Impact

The Silence allowed humanity to evolve without outside interference but also left them vulnerable and ignorant of the true nature of the universe. The breaking of the Silence is the catalyst for the game's story.
